At Shinjuku Monastery, the Zen Master sat and sipped a cup of tea, he heard with curiosity of what the novice monks were chatting on. So he called on the two novice monks and asked what they were chatting on.
Zen Master: What are you chatting? It seems very important.
Novice Taa: I am observing all things around me and find that those are all changing and not permanent. But Novice Jai said… “I only see things that my eyes can see, but not myself. What I have to do to see myself, my Master?”
Novice Jai: Me either, my Master, I can only “know” those things but all things that I know or see are rising and ceasing within me. But I can’t see myself neither. Please tell me, my Master, what I need to do to see myself?
Zen Master: What you are curious of are quite beneficial. If anyone who may, “know the secret” of this element, that person will realize and be freed from all sufferings eternally.
Novices Taa and Jai: My esteemed Master, please be merciful and disclose that secret to us, humble novices, please, our Master.
Zen Master: It’s time for you two to calm down. I will tell you.
Let’s start with you first, Novice Taa, you can see “things” that means your eyes see things but your eyes did not see your own eyes. Is that true or false?
Novice Taa: Yes, truly indeed.
Zen Master: Even though you can’t see yourself, it is like your eyes can’t see your own eyes. But the eyes can see and know that all things to be seen entirely are not your own eyes. So the eyes never be deluded that all things to be seen are not the eyes. Eyes are always eyes forever. Is that true or false?
Novice Taa: That’s true, my Master.
Zen Master: Because … the eyes know the eyes.
Zen Master: For your sake also, Novice Jai, you realized that the rising and ceasing appearances inherently occurred in your mind are intuitive awareness. To be able to realize the rising and ceasing appearances in your heart. In spite of the fact that “heart can’t see heart”. This is the same as “eyes can’t see eyes” but yet the heart never takes other things to become heart because the heart never be deluded since “Heart knows the Heart”.
Novice Jai: Everything you said are all so true, my humble self, can’t argue with at all.
Zen Master: Novice Jai, do you realize that all things that can be aware of, rising and ceasing in your mind is not yet your heart. Therefore the heart knows only the heart and will never be deluded by other rising and ceasing of mental formations within the mind to be the heart any longer.
Zen Master: Even though you two can’t see yourselves but you two know yourselves. That’s why you know what is what. When you see, you know that all things are not yourselves. This would make you “stop” searching for yourselves. This is “the secret of the reincarnation, the round of existence, (Samsara)”. Now you two should not have any doubts left any longer. Is that so?
Novices Taa and Jai: There is nothing left to be doubtful any longer; our Zen Master. May we both bow with respectful esteem to our Zen Master.
