Prayers and Devotion : Why do we need to redeem our vow/oath/promise/wish? In both our present and many past lives, we might have made several vows, oaths, promises, or wishes for ourselves or those we love. We might have inwardly cursed at someone, be it humans or animals, or borne them any ill-will. We might also have reprimanded or berated those who actually possess good hearts, practise Dhamma or are always being mindfulness. All these actions caused by a lack of knowing or awareness, whether done intentionally or unintentionally will become an obstacle by blocking out our understandings during our Dhamma practice. Therefore, we have to withdraw our false views by taking back those vows, oaths, promises, wishes, curses, or ill-wills we might have made both in our present and past lives. It is similar to when we format a computer or mobile phone when they get a virus - reset everything to default before inputting the right data into the device. In Dhamma practice, that data is called “Samma Dhitti” (the Right View or the Right Understanding; realising the truth of the nature) which can be derived by being aware of our own thoughts, feelings, emotions, or anything that happen in our mind at the very present moment.
